John Benjamin Dorsett, age 74, passed away unexpectedly on August 19, 2026, in Hilltop Lakes, Texas.

John was a proud Texan whose life was defined by service, hard work, kindness, and a genuine willingness to help others. He believed strongly in being an honest and good person, even when honesty was difficult. Through his words, his actions, and the many stories he shared, John continually encouraged those around him to work hard, live with integrity, and help those in need.

John earned his baccalaureate degree from Sam Houston University. He later completed his training as an EMT and worked as a medic in the Houston and Austin areas. His dedication to serving others extended into his military career. John enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1979 and then joined the Army National Guard in 1980. He proudly served in the National Guard until his retirement in 2011, completing 32 years of service to a country he deeply loved. During those years, he completed multiple deployments around the world, serving and training in support of his country.

Even after retiring from military service, John continued to serve his community. He remained active with the local VFW and was dedicated to serving the communities of Hilltop Lakes and Normangee.

John was the kind of man who would help a perfect stranger without hesitation. He was a gifted and descriptive storyteller, and his stories almost always carried a lesson about being a moral, hardworking, and compassionate human being. He lived a simple life because he believed in giving what he could to those who needed it.

Although John did not have biological children of his own, he became a father and grandfather figure to many. Through his vast experiences and the wisdom he shared, he taught others more than he probably ever realized. His kindness, love, and willingness to help left an impression on everyone fortunate enough to call him a friend or family.

John was known for his incredible work ethic. He was often up early in the morning, walking his beloved dog, Rocky, before heading to the gym. He would take care of his yard and still have enough energy to outwork the average person. He believed in making use of the abilities God had given him and lived by the philosophy that if you don't use it, you lose it.

John could be stubborn and was never one to want to burden anyone or ask for help. Those who loved him often reminded him that he was never a burden—he was family. His heart of gold, generous spirit, and countless stories created memories that will remain with those who knew him.

John was also a collector of many things. When asked why he kept so much, his answer was simple: he kept things "just in case someone needed it." That sentiment perfectly reflected the way he lived—always thinking about how he could be useful to someone else.

Among John's favorite things were music and attending concerts, animals—especially dogs—Texas, football and the Houston Texans, and spending time at the beach in Galveston. He was proud of his Texas roots and loved the state he called home.

John is survived by his cousins, Paulette White of Mississippi, Addye Robertson of Louisiana, and Kevin Dorsett of Houston, Texas; his beloved dog, Rocky; and the Zibert family of Arizona, who were dear friends and considered family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. John B. Dorsett; his mother, Juanita Dorsett; his uncles, Paul Dorsett, Russell Dorsett, and Jack Dorsett; and his aunts, Elizabeth Dorsett/Lane, Mary Dorsett/White, and Alice Dorsett.

John's life was one of service, generosity, and quiet devotion to others. He served his country, served his community, helped those in need, and shared his wisdom through stories and example. His life touched many people, and his lessons, laughter, stubborn determination, and heart of gold will continue to live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was proud to serve. He was proud to be a Texan. Most of all, he was proud to help others. John will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Visitation at Cozart from 1-3 and service at 3 pm and a burial to follow at Hopewell Cemetery on Saturday September 26th.
