Nelda Glenewinkel Ewald

August 17, 1927 — October 27, 2024

Nelda Glenewinkel Ewald passed away Sunday morning, October 27, 2024.  She had a peaceful passing in her home at Hilltop Lakes with her two sons in attendance.

Nelda was born August 17, 1927 near Hunter, Texas in Hays County.  Shortly after birth her parents moved to Guadalupe County with Nelda and her two older siblings, L. Roy and Eunice.  Nelda grew up in the Wade community and graduated high school from Kingsbury High, shortly before WW2.

Nelda worked in civil defense at Fort Sam Houston, then later the San Antonio Light while she attended the Draughan’s Commercial College.  On October 22, 1948 Nelda married Harold E.Ewald in the Grayson Street Methodist Church in San Antonio.  Harold attended the University of Texas Pharmacy College and Nelda worked part time and gave birth to their firstborn, Larry Craig.  Upon graduation they moved to Lockhart for a short time, then to Corpus Christi for several years. While in Corpus, Brenda Gail was born and shortly after that they moved to Taft, Texas, where they built Ewald Pharmacy.  The last child, Bart Wilson, was born during the Taft period.

In 1977, they sold the Taft store and began to build their final store in Caldwell, where they retired from, moving to Hilltop Lakes in 1988.

Nelda’s role in the drugstore was crucial as she kept up with the day to day paperwork which left Harold more available to customers.  But she also spent a good deal of time waiting on customers and helping Harold during rush periods.  While in Taft, she was often seen ferrying her kids to and from piano lessons, twirling lessons, band practice and little league.  She spent a good deal of time sewing clothes and twirling outfits for Brenda and some of her friends.  She was also busy working with the Coastal Bend Pharmacy Auxiliary organizing regional and state conferences/conventions.

Nelda decided in Caldwell to join Harold on the golf course, and found she enjoyed it.  They joined a group called Grasshoppers, which is a group of couples that travel the state to play casual, social tournaments.  Once they moved to Hilltop Nelda became active in the Women’s Golf Association, and they also recruited several other couples to Grasshoppers.  When it was too dark for golf, you could almost always find them being social with others in a game of Hand and Foot, or 31 or 42.

Harold and Nelda traveled Texas extensively, some planned and some spur of the moment, and took several junkets to Canada and Europe.

Nelda is preceded in death by her husband Harold Ewald and daughter Brenda Easterwood-Collard, her parents Harry A. and Alma Hagemann Glenewinkel, her brother L. Roy Glenewinkel, and sister Eunice Irwin,.

She is survived by sons Larry (Connie) Ewald of Bulverde,Texas, Bart Ewald of Hilltop Lakes, granddaughters Lauren Ewald and Andrea Cravens (Cody), grandsons Nicholas and Noah Ewald and one great granddaughter, Aria Cravens.

A memorial service will be held on January 12, 2025 at 11 AM at the Crystal Chandelier Silver Center in Seguin, Texas. Express condolences at www.Cozartfuneralhome.com.
